The Challenge
A federal government organization manages a high tempo, geographically diverse workforce that focuses on building and maintaining critical global relationships. These relationships are a fundamental component in executing both political and military strategies. The client's personnel community plays an integral role in honing and utilizing fluid domestic and international relationships for the benefit of their parent organization. In order to maximize relationship building prowess, the client's senior leadership needed to cement its workforce roles and abilities and continually educate with regards to core competencies, career development, and functional and leadership training.

The Solution
Wedgewood developed a framework to establish, implement, and manage a multifaceted Workforce Initiatives Program for this large and geographically diverse employee population. The Workforce Initiatives Program and related directives facilitate the management and implementation of the following:

  • Certification and Career Development Program—a centralized three-tiered certification program that standardizes credentials for a diverse workforce by outlining organizational discipline, education, and training criteria
  • Master of Arts Program—an academic curriculum sponsored through a major, well-respected, private university and customized to advance the workforce’s ability to understand, build and maintain complex relationships at the strategic level
  • Specialized Career Field—a comprehensive plan to develop existing and future employees in the field by managing individual positions and through internships, job mobility and selection, and training programs

The Result
The client improved professionalism and education levels within the workforce while solidifying a construct to prioritize skill sets, training curriculums and career development paths conducive to their workforce development needs. By providing these developmental opportunities employees have demonstrated a higher level of ability and aptitude than ever before, giving leadership confidence in the development of an elite, educated and effective personnel force. The client has certified and educated more than 75% of its workforce as part of this program. The Workforce Initiatives Program has resulted in an impressive quantitative Return on Investment (ROI) as participation in each program has continuously increased since inception over four years ago.
