The Challenge
Senior leaders in a federal government organization realized the need to develop high-potential employees to meet future leadership challenges. They recognized that many employees were leaving their organization because they did not see how the current organization would allow them to achieve personal and professional goals. Meanwhile, other high-potential employees were not being ‘tapped’ to bring their best to work everyday and, although still in the organization, had become disenfranchised and fairly ineffective. The natural consequence of allowing these situations to persist is that as current leaders retire or move on to new opportunities, no one is available with the necessary experience to fill these positions and ultimately the organization will struggle to meet its most important objectives.

The Solution
Wedgewood developed a concept for a mentorship program tailored specifically for the organization's changing demands. Additionally, Wedgwood worked with organizational senior leaders to refine program goals that included creating an environment that helps retain qualified people and increases employee productivity, facilitating effective professional development of all workforce members, and providing a personal development resource for each participant. We designed, developed, and implemented a pilot program to validate the concept and provide recommendations for full-scale implementation.

The Result
On average, 8-20% of the workforce, both military and civilian, are enrolled in the program at any given time. Both mentors and mentees have had opportunities to expand their leadership, interpersonal, and technical skills through their partnership. The development of employees with leadership potential offers the organization a team of well-rounded and motivated employees. The mentorship program makes the organization more attractive to potential employees and helps retain a qualified, quality workforce.
